In “Shiny Gods,†Dr. Mike Slaughter makes a strong case that we should avoid things that distract our time and resources from what is important. He effectively uses the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30) to show that what is important is using the ways that God blesses us to bless others. “God supplies seed; God doesn’t print money.†This sentence appears six times in the book to emphasize that each one of us has “a unique set of qualities that need to be treated like a seed†and the more we sow, the more we will harvest.Dr. Slaughter makes a persuasive argument with examples from his Church and from the Bible for adopting a 10-10-80 financial plan. The first 10% of “everything that comes into your hand†should go to God, the second 10% should go to the future (Dr. Slaughter dislikes the concept of retirement, particularly a retirement focused on golf - which might be my "shiny god"), and the remaining 80% should take care of expenses and avoidance of debt.Dr. Slaughter keeps his message intentionally simple in this short book, but perhaps he oversimplifies his message and perhaps the book was not edited as diligently as it should have been. One example of both oversimplifying (or distorting) the Biblical message and imperfect editing is his explanation of the story of the Widow’s Oil (2 Kings 4:1-7). Dr. Slaughter uses this story as an example that humanity’s ability to work is God’s means of providing for us, and this conclusion is valid. But he says that the widow’s problem of paying her debts was solved after Elijah told her to get a job, and there are two issues with this explanation. First, this story seems to be more about the widow’s faith - which was rewarded by God miraculously making her quantity of oil multiply – than about her going to work. Secondly, the prophet who instructed the widow was Elisha, not Elijah.
I didn't find anything particularly new here. It's a good stewardship study, but as someone who's read several of these, I found it saying pretty much what all the others have said. Still, it was an interesting exercise to think about what "my" idols are, something I intend to ask the class I'll be teaching on this subject. Also, I do like Mike Slaughter's stories. He does have a knack for finding interesting ones to illustrate his points.
This was a short read. However, this short read made you truly think about what your idols are. We as Christians should not have idols, of course, but unless we have done some serious soul-searching, we probably do. I would recommend this wholeheartedly.
Great read.
very superficial; pointed to the success in his personal life and ministry as proof of godly living which came across as self righteous. Poor use of scripture, in that lots of verses were lifted in isolation, out of context. If using this book I would recommend that it be used as an outline for a series of sermons or classes but that it be suplemented with other materials
This book targets young to middle-aged adults who are materialistic in a secular world. It just didn't really apply to my age group or place in life. It was, however, a quick and easy read.
Thanks to Pastor Mike for sharing his hopeful, faith-filled perspective on prosperity and the gifts God has given us. I love his expression, "God doesn't print money, he provides seeds to plant." I'm thinking much differently today about my finances and my faith.
The book includes good reminders for us in our daily lives. It is a good companion to Its Not Your Birthday.
