The book is written as a very easy read with tons of information. I've visited South Africa 20 years ago and I found the information useful in the book ad could relate to many personal observations made in the book.
This guidebook was a good overview of the area, but not as great as some other guidebooks I've used for other cities. It may be a personal preference thing, and I can't quite nail down what I don't like about this book, but the organization wasn't great and didn't make it easy to jump from activity to nearby activity. Also, in didn't go as indepth as I would have like about a lot of the different activities and how/where you can book them or have any reviews of different businesses offering them. The maps were also a bit confusing and one larger built in overall map of the city/surrounding area would have been really helpful in deciphering their smaller soomed in versions of just one neighborhood. If you're headed to cape town, I'd try a dfferent book.
If it is your first time in the Cape Town area, I suggest using this book in conjunction with the City Seeing "Hop on Hop off" bus tours. Extremely useful book. Much better than the Frommer's Day-by-Day guide.
I was in Cape Town a year ago, and am planning to go again later this year. This guide has helped me and my friend plan a super holiday! The tips on where to stay was especially helpful, and I also liked that it covered so much more than just the "touristy" spots in Cape town and the surrounding region. Anyone visiting Cape Town, whether from a neigbouring country or from oversees, will find this guide helpful.
Informative !!
I bought this guide for my recent trip to Cape Town, both because it had received better customer reviews than the Lonely Planet guide and because 10 years ago, the Rough Guide to South Africa was outstanding on my first trip to the country. The content of the guide is adequate, if not particularly special, and indeed I only ever use a travel guide as a guide - not a bible! Still, the organization leaves much to be desired, and would be much improved if it were organized by neighborhood/area. The first 1/3 of the guide, which focuses on the city of Cape Town, is organized into different chapters, which means that if you're sightseeing in a particular neighborhood but are looking for a reliable and recommended nosh, you'll have to turn to the chapter on eating and THEN find the neighborhood you're in before proceeding - which makes the process very clunky.
Lots of really good info . Perhaps more than a casual visitor needs. Definitely good value with lots of information
Informative, quite comprehensive. I liked the logical sections and the descriptions all seemed accurate. There was not much on shark cage diving, which is something I had to research on my own. Lots of people do that in Cape Town, so that was a bit annoying.
