Liz Sales writes these things for a living, and she invites us to break the tension of the (oft-pretentious) art of writing artist statements with a tongue-in-cheek view of her own occupation. She had me laughing out loud from the very beginning. Now I feel less heartbroken and embarrassed, and more enlightened - thanks for inviting me into your mind, Sales :)
I end up reading through again and again this hilarious and heartening book many times at random. It is incredibly clever and sharp; Sales reveals an aptness and keen observation that is necessary to sift through the clutter of today's artist statements and in general, how people in many industries, tend to talk about their work.We have entered an era of overspecialization and under-personalization which affects the way we present ourselves.I LOVE this book and Sales' writing bc it not only makes me laugh and appreciate the truths about the art world, but because it highlights so many larger truths found surrounding all of us ~!
This book is so clever, hilarious, and almost eerily too true to the art world. If you like the witty and fun satire of a Christopher Guest film, then you will LOVE this book. It's also a wonderful gift for any artist or writer in your life. Brilliant.
As an artist and an art educator, I find this book to be delightfully subversive in all the best ways! I have used this book in the classroom to loosen and limber up students as we dig into writing about our work. Too many times I will hear some nonsense about not needing to articulate work through writing or that the work should speak for itself. Well of course! But the reality is we need to write and it is expected in the profession of being an artist. Ms. Sales combines her experience as an artist, writer and educator to the table in this incredibly funny book that brings us back to reality while giving us a good chuckle at our intentions and overestimations of impossible projects and statements. We are all guilty of this crime…
