James Thurber was what used to be referred to as a "New Yorker" writer: Essentially this meant he wrote (mostly) short pieces that were sardonic, satirical, not infrequently mean, and, because he WAS James Thurber, after all, funny.What they were NOT, was moving or heart-feltExcept when he was writing about dogs.Thurber may not have had a very high opinion of us people, but he LOVED dogs. I defy anyone to read his "Memorial to a Dog" and not wipe a tear from your eye (even if you are a... forgive my language.. CAT person)Dave Barry is our modern day James Thurber, although I think he holds SOME of people in higher regard, but he has the Thurber touch when it comes to dogsAnd, yes, you may well find yourself wiping away a bit of moisture now and again while reading this, tooSo, from me and an aging Boxer named Dexter, we raise a glass of wine and drool respectively... and respectfully... to Mr Barry and Lucy

He started paying attention to Lucy’s nonstop attitude of joy and conceived seven rules for happiness, vowing to apply them more to his own life. For readers hoping to do the same, Lesson Two is a good start (“Don’t stop having fun. [And if you have stopped, start having fun again.]â€) -- and this book (like anything Dave writes) is a great way.There are delightful dog stories here, and plenty of humor as Dave takes his trademark segues into humorous human anecdotes. But there are touching passages, too (dare I say, self-help?), that palatably nudge writer and reader toward appreciating the truly important things in life. A fun and satisfying read.
If you are a Dave Barry fan (and I am), you can't help but like Lessons From Lucy. Barry's jabs, quips, and weird observations come to life once again. However, Barry notes that this book is his first "self-help" book. Lucy ( a dog) knows how to be happy. Dave Barry does not. "This book represents my attempt to understand how Lucy manages to be so happy, and to figure out whether I can use any of her methods to make my own life happier."The book is a mixed bag when it comes to giving real advice. I mean, consider the third lesson:"Pay attention to the people you love. (Not later. Right now.)"Really? This is something Barry took 70 years to understand, and he needed a dog to teach him this lesson?I was in a museum bookstore a few days ago, and there was this collection of bookmarks featuring "sage wisdom" from a variety of birds. Did you know that a chickadee recommends that you "get along with everyone," and "make a cozy nest"? The point is, Barry's seven lessons are shallow and uninspired. That's not to say I don't appreciate being reminded to "pay attention to the people you love." It's just that, coming from Dave Barry, the lessons come across as awkward and forced. Barry, you're a humor writer. You could write about Lucy without trying to capture new readers in the "self-help" market.
I’ve been a Dave Barry fan since – well since he first started publishing. I find his humor, outlook on life and acute observation almost identical to mine. Unlike Dave Barry he has be ability to articulate what I am unable to do...curses.In this offering Barry turns his quick wit and rather artful prose to his aging dog and as with all of his writing pretty well nails it. This is not (thank goodness) a ‘dead dog at the end of the story’ but rather observation he has made, via his dog, on happiness, aging, getting along with people and unconditional love – something in this day and age we have almost a complete lack of. I found the book almost inspirational and having had many dog companions though by life was able to relate perfectly. Barry and I are most the same age (I have a few years on him) but I found his observations spot one.This is a quick read and I was able to finish in a day and must admit I will read it again and this time take my time with it to soak in the pleasure of reading it.
Both my son and I are big Dave Barry fans (me for longer than he, naturally) - but I when I saw this book - I was curious to see if Barry could pull off a book that appeared to be more heartwarming and heartfelt instead of his usual snark mixed with bathroom humor. And...he certainly can!I loved this book - it was still laugh out loud funny but was also pretty sweet and thoughtful. This old dog certainly has traits that can be learned from and taken to heart. Unconditional love, energy, interest in life, patience...all are things most people need a bit more of in their life. My son liked it as well because Barry's usual humor still shines through - and it doesn't hurt that my son adores dogs as well.Both of us will continue to read and love any and every book that this talented writer creates....
