This is the second book in the Daniel Briggs saga. Cooper is setting this character with his idiosyncrasies up for inclusion in his Corps Justice series. All the novels are rather short, under 250 pages, which isn't necessarily bad, but I believe adds to the rather rushed feeling I have gotten from both books. While I don't enjoy books that drag on and on and on (the Jason Bourne books specifically) where failure after failure after failure makes their reading tedious, these have very little in the way of developing a sense of urgency. One, maybe two mishaps occur which do little to hinder the progress of the determined, superhero main character. He gets the job done quickly and efficiently. I also found the "possessed by the beast" aspect a bit too scifi. This change in personality is supposedly the result of his PTSD from multiple deployments and subsequent losses/failures on his part to save his buddies. With the lack of good character development he comes across as schizophrenic, that perhaps being the point and I am looking for something the author didn't intend. I will finish the series hoping for some real answers to this question. As for the stories themselves, I feel that characters made discoveries/revelations that had no foreshadowing whatsoever for the reader to have that aha moment. The knowledge was just suddenly there. While this is a legitimate technique I feel this is another short cut Cooper used just to prepare us for Briggs bigger role in the other series. BTW, I read two of the Corps Justice books and they were much better written, so go ahead and read them all. I plan to.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Fallen". There are many similarities between the Daniel Briggs stories and those of Lee Childs' Jack Reacher. Although, I think that Daniel is more vicious than Jack when it comes to fighting the enemy. In Fallen, Daniel gets off the bus in Maine for a bite to eat and some sightseeing. However, just like Jack, trouble has a tendency to find Daniel, and he never gets to finish his meal. After disposing of the group that had challenged him, Daniel rushes to the outskirts of town to avoid the police. There, he is befriended by a church pastor who feeds him and gives him sanctuary for a couple of days. The pastor has a daughter, Anna, who takes care of him and helps him with church matters. Suddenly, she discovers something that she was not supposed to see and disappears.Daniel sets out to find Anna and finds himself battling the Russian mob, falling into a well-thought out trap - one, tailored especially for somebody like him. There are many twists, and the ending will leave readers with mouths agape. Fast moving and hard to put down. Looking forward to another Daniel installment if the author is up to it.Great job Mr. Cooper!John Podlaski, authorCherries - A Vietnam War Novel
WOW! There were some great twists and turns and the writing, once again, kept me captivated from start to finish. I love how the characters develop and we learn more about Daniel Briggs. It was a great follow up to the first book Adrift: A Daniel Briggs Novel (Corp Justice Series Book 1). Also gives a good background to one of the main characters in the Corp Justice Series. Corps Justice Boxed Set: Books 1-3: Back to War, Council of Patriots, Prime Asset - Military Thrillers (Corp Justice Series) The book includes an incredible quote that touched me deeply;"I have found that it is best not to live with regret. It is better to look to the future and create a joy that will outshine the shadows of our past."During my husband's first journey with cancer in 2008 we learned how short life really is and how we can't afford to live a life of regret. Life's for living and for living to its fullest with no regrets. That lesson was brought to light again 11 months ago when we were told his cancer was back. When you have that feeling that you should be doing something or reaching out to someone...just do it. If you don't you may come to regret it. Life is too short for regrets.Thank you Carlos for writing another amazing book and for including such an incredible quote!
I’ve become a fan of Mr. Cooper’s books, and there’s definitely been an evolution in his writing style and the complexities of his novels. I enjoy reading Flynn/Mills, Connelly, Child, Sandford and Thor for entertainment and their take on current events. Cooper seems to be developing similar insight beyond his extensive knowledge of military issues and tactics. This Daniel Briggs novel had a surprise ending I wasn’t expecting, which was a new and welcomed twist to Cooper’s writing style. I enjoy books where the good guys are truly good men and women. Yes, they all have flaws, but they’re not burdens with an underlying lack of virtue. It’s also apparent that his new group of grammar police have helped him to proof his work and find easily overlooked mistakes that are hard to find in one’s own work. I am a fan and look forward to devouring the rest of the Corps Justice books along with his other series.
There are only four books in this series and each one is better than the last. Daniel Briggs is a main character with a lot of depth. He's capable without being egotistical, he's high skilled, but has not lost his ability to be empathetic, he's got a real sense of right and wrong, and he's an honest character. If you cross him or are doing something to someone else that is wrong by all standards he eliminates the problem. You can feel his guilt, pain, and sorrow, but all are traits that make you really, really like him. The author has done a wonderful job of writing and makes the reader anxious to read more of his books. EXCELLENT way to spend an evening by immersing yourself in any of C. G. Cooper's books.
