Elaine Lowry Brye, an avid supporter of and advocate for military families, served as a longtime moderator for the USNA-Parents listserv and was one of the founding organizers of its parent community website and Facebook page. She became a national figure when she introduced Michelle Obama at the 2012 Democratic Convention. She lives with her husband in northeast Ohio.Nan Gatewood Satter, a writer and independent book editor, is the daughter of a highly decorated Navy fighter pilot. She lives with her husband and son in New York's Hudson Valley.

My first son entered the Marines after our plan for four years of college and baseball. After one year of college and baseball he wasn't happy and wanted to serve. So he enlisted....which meant that I was drafted! I didn't head for Canada in protest, but instead went into the fetal position for a few days and began reaching out for support online. One of the first recommendations was this book. I now pass this along to you. A lot of it won't pertain, but a lot will become familiar. We military families are a special group with our own special bond that no one else can understand until they are there. Oohrah to all of the families out there supporting their armed forces and a special Semper Fi to my Marines!
Best book! New military mom here. I was told to read this. It brought tears to my eyes that were good and sad. It has so much wisdom and assurance for us new moms especially. I can’t express enough if you are a new military mom, read this. It’s not one of those hokey ‘mom let go of your kid’ books. It’s nothing like that. I’m a free range parent (most of the time) and the information shared in this book is beyond grateful. When your child volunteers for the military because they want to, not because they have to, not because that’s the only choice, but because something in their bones tell them it’s who and where they should be, you let your child fly...you’re gonna cry a lot at the coop when their gone, but this book is gonna help. A LOT.

Definitely the support & encouragement I needed. When I bought this book I had (still have) 1 active Army Combat Medic. It was incredibly insightful & helpful from the start. Since then he has been deployed & his little brother (9 years younger & a twin) signed with the Marines, delayed entry. This is getting me through, building my Faith, helping me breath & prepare as my 2nd one (of 3) answers the inner call. There are few other mothers who understand, and before this book I only had FB support of other mothers. This wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and reassurance is a God send. This book was/is a helpful tool of what a parent goes through as their child decides to be a 1%-er. The author takes you through her own life as a mother sending four children off to different branches of the military. From boot camps, deployment, marriage, births, death, and PTSD this book was amazing. But be ready - Kleenex DOES NOT come provided.
This is a great read for all military family and civilians alike. The range of emotions that I experienced while reading ranged from outbursts of laughter to child-like sobbing. As the mother of a United States Marine, I feel that this book was a much needed beacon of hope, insuring me that I am never alone. As a mother of a Marine Officer and a Naval Flight Officer in training, I loved this book...Mrs. Brye captures not only the pride we parents feel for our sons and daughters who make the sacrifice for our country as well as the sacrifice we parents make when we unabashedly support their decisions to serve. From the many aspects of her life as a military "brat", a member of the military herself, a military wife and as a military mother she brings a unique view of the stresses, the worry, the pride, and mostly the love of country and our children that we military mothers and fathers share, those of us who are in this "sisterhood" and "fatherhood".It should be required reading by anyone who has a loved one thinking about joining our military service. Elaine captures my feelings and the feelings of many others just like me, who will watch our children take their beginning steps towards protecting our country through her first hand experience in a touching, matter of fact, loving, supportive manner that is easy to read, easier to understand and a perfect gift for any mother on the day her son or daughter takes their oath to serve.I cried and laughed as I read of her childhood, marriage, the subsequent raising of her children and her first hand experiences in this big world, especially in the Middle East. She is the "battle buddy" every mother needs as her "baby" goes away on a deployment as she has been there, done that and has many (9) T shirts to prove it. I have purchased extra copies of the book to have on hand to pass on to other mothers who need a battle buddy of their own. I highly recommend Be Save, Love, Mom!
