This was not as entertaining or thought-provoking as, for example, The Castle of Crossed Destinies, and the Kindle version contained a sufficient number of typos to be distracting.
Ok, this is an early work of Calvino's and as such it lacks the polish of his latter works. It does show the influence of some of the lesser known Italian masters of magical realism such as Aldo Palazzeschi. Yet this apparently whimsical fairy tale of a knight cleaved into two separate but incomplete personae is as relevant today as it was in the early fifties. It operates on many levels, an allegory of Italian politiccs, the cold war struggle between east and west etc.Of course we can see the beginnings of Calvino's interest in the role of myth to the writer, the philosophical questions of good versus evil, the existence of evil and the struggle between controlling both of these these impulses, think of a modern day Plato and his tale of the charioteer. It is difficult to form an attachment to the story until midway through book when the "good knight" makes an arrival. It is my personal interest in certain writers that the weight of their greatest works makes reading their lesser ones deserving of that effort, but then again I would be happy to read a laundry list if Hemingway wrote it.

Viscount Medardo from the mountains above Genua rises to the occasion and is soon severely wounded, cleft vertically into two halves, which the incredibly brilliant battlefield surgeons of the time manage to suture, stitch and cobble together into two living entities, halved Giacometti’s, who, aided by crutches and covered by wide, dark capes, hop and stumble slowly, laboriously and separately back to Genua. There, the first Medardo-half arriving reclaims the castle and starts a reign of terror. The straggling half--living rough nearby-- quickly becomes a by-word for goodness.Fabulation and exaggeration are everywhere. Fiendish cruelty soon competes with reaching out to the poor and excluded like lepers and Huguenots. How will this end, esp. when both halves of Viscount Medardo fall in love with the same poor damsel tending one goat and one duck?Italo Calvino (1923-85) created quite an oeuvre that has been busily analysed and interpreted. As a recreational reader, I find him a joyful discovery I will return to in future. Highly recommended.
