Pros: Lots of photos..Cons: very repetative, with relatively little info not readily available when you're in the area. Example: the Xcaret eco-park, a highly-advertised (and expensive) tourist-focused theme park, gets a 2 page spread, plus listings on 5 additional pages in 4 different "10 Best Of" sections. Add this to very limited info on things that are a little harder to find on one's own, such as the many beautiful, less advertised cenotes that haven't been turned into high-admission tourist attractions, and you have one minimally useful book. If I were to recommend it at all, it would be to first-time visitors to the area who don't want to miss the major hotspots. For people looking to see and understand this magical area of Mayan Mexico, this book is a no-starter.
Generally speaking, Eyewitness Travel guides are worth their weight in gold when traveling to a new city/country. This book, however, wasn't as helpful. It doesn't contain as many street-wise tips as the others, such as which taxi companies to use, bus routes, or transportation instructions for specific venues. It also does not contain activities that are widely regarded as some of the best activities in the area (as proven by thousands of reviews on TripAdvisor). Perhaps it's just time for a new version.
I find the Top Ten books a good way to get an idea about a given location. They are also small enough to carry around during the day, if needed, as opposed to a bulky travel book. I would rate this book a good but not great. I do feel I got my money's worth out of the book, as it has some excellent travel tips and general background in addition to information on sights. However, the maps that came with the book were totally useless. Scale was either too big or too small.
Really outdated information and missing a ton of new information. We found many places not included in this guide. Not worth it.
My husband and I have traveled around the world relying on the accuracy and usability of the DK Eyewitness Travel series. Unfortunately, this book was a complete let down. Many of the Top 10 items appear on several lists, so you're only learning about a few key areas in the entire region. The biggest frustration we had was that there were no detailed maps included...not even one for Cancun. There was a large regional map, but it had little to no detail, so was utterly useless if you wanted to explore any of the Top 10 suggestions. Forget the convenience of size...get a full-size book so it can be useful.
I love Eyewitness Travel Guides. They are very practical and smaller that you can have it perfectly in your pocket. My boyfriend and I are going to go to Cancun for 4 days for a weeding, and this guide has given me good ideas and tips what we can do in our two free days. It has a map which you can take it out and see where do you want to go. Also, it has gay advices for gay people who are looking for gay action in Cancun. I really suggest this pocket travel guide; you will enjoy it.
This guide is easy to use and great if used in conjunction with an additional guide to the area. The maps would have been more helpful if they had a bit more detail. If looking for a starting reference for your trip to the area this is a good book. It has some of the larger and better known spots in it.
It was just what I needed. Small enough to easily carry and very informative.
