A New York Times Book Reiview Notable Children's Book of 2018A Boston Globe Best Children's Book of 2018Selected as the Best Graphic Novel of 2018 by Parents Magazine"Beautifully drawn, brutally funny, brilliantly honest. Vera is such a good cartoonist I almost can’t stand it.†―Raina Telgemeier, author of Smile"Perfect for fans of Shannon Hale’s Real Friends (2017), this will easily lodge a place in readers’ hearts, even as it has them rolling in the aisles."―Booklist, starred"The story, both culturally specific and universal, is a welcome addition to the growing canon of comics tales by talented women cartoonists (Raina Telgemeier, Tillie Walden, Zeina Abirached, Cece Bell, and many others) based on their own lives."―Horn Book, starred"The dialogue rings true, the pace is seamless, and the panel artwork, in woodsy browns and greens, conveys feelings with clean, assured lines. By turns sardonic, adorable, and noble, Vera is a beguiling hero who learns how to recognize who's really on her side."―Publishers Weekly, starred"A gorgeous, emotional memoir worthy of any graphic novel collection."―School Library Journal, starred"While the culturally specific references will particularly resonate with kids of Russian heritage, the larger story will strike chords with any kid who has ever struggled to find a place to belong."―Kirkus"There’s no real villainy here, just the quotidian slings and arrows carelessly shot by kids more concerned with fun than empathy. That makes Vera a character with appeal to every tween who’s ever felt disappointed by peers―or by a fulfilled wish that didn’t live up to its bright, shiny promise."―The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

mixed emotions about this book, said 10 and up reading level. and looked to be camping themed. i bought it for my 10 year old son who loves camping. he loved the book and related to how sometimes people are your friends for the wrong reasons. but after reading it he asked my wife what a period was after reading it. it says "girl drama" in the reviews but i didnt realize that was what it meant. i think the reading level was fine, but am a little annoyed it was not more specific on the description.
This graphic novel is loosely based on the author’s real-life experiences and her Russian-American background and that makes for a unique twist on a familiar setting for some kids - summer camp! 9-year old Vera is a Russian immigrant and we learn at the beginning of the novel, she doesn’t doesn’t exactly fit in with the popular crowd. Or really any crowd at all. Her family is poor and their traditions and food are just enough “culturally off†to make her feel awkward among the girls she invites to a birthday sleepover that goes bad…. And oh man… how I felt for poor Vera that night! That’s some real-life cringe-worthy stuff though. Vera desperately wants to fit in and finally convinces her mother to send her and her brother to a Russian summer camp sponsored by their Orthodox church where they will learn the Russian language and religion along with the typical summer camp things - like learning why you shouldn’t feed the wildlife and finding a comfortable place to poop! Brosgol’s illustrations are outstanding with a foresty green color palette. And this book about the poor choices one can make in the quest for friendship along with that added layer of feeling like you don’t really belong enough in any culture makes this graphic novel feel like a blend of Shannon Hale’s Real Friends and Kelly Yang’s Front Desk. This would be a great recommendation for kids in about grades 4 or 5 and up.
This book is great! My 9yo daughter loves it. Great for young campers, or girls trying to find their way in the world.
My daughter never reads books multiple times and she has read this many times now. She really wishes it had a sequel or just more. She said that lots of times. She is almost 11 years old.
I saw the initial story on Free Comic Book Day, and knew I had to get the entire book.It did NOT disappoint!!!Lots of smiles, laughs, tears, reflections, and fluid well-done storytelling. The hardback makes a great gift. I truly can recommend it for any age.
awesome book very short sweet and like every camp you have a good friend and a bully if you read the book you should also readSmile ,Sisters, and Drama some words in Russian
More of the great adolesence/childhood experiences of Ms. Brosgol as continued from Santa's Ghost.
In the autobiographical "Be Yourself", Russian-American cartoonist Vera Brosgol recounts her time at a Russian-language scouting camp, touching on themes of doing anything to be accepted by your peers, to being blamed for an innocent screw-up. Touching, funny, and even sad in places, this is another extremely compelling work by a talented creator.
