I thought this would be a book slamming the Religious Right. Actually that's what I hoped it would be. It wasn't. It was an educational thesis of religion in America. The story goes back to the turn of the last century, long before I thought this story would begin. It detailed the rise of several leaders over the years. It turned out to be a much more detailed history lesson than just a book ridiculing the right. Even though it was detailed and informative, it wasn't boring. I really got into it.

Terrific book. Deep, analytical history that explores how religion became central in American public life. As a Christian one of the things that bothers me about that centrality is the consumerist nature of it, and understanding the extent of its roots in corporate campaigns to blend capitalism and Christianity. This offers a fair, thorough look at how that developed, and anyone dismissing it as anti-Christian or even anti-public religion is doing themselves a disservice. If nothing else, understanding the origins of "One Nation Under God" as a phrase and how its meaning developed is worthwhile.

As a US History prof I highly recommend this book. Kevin Kruse has done an outstanding job in bringing to light an absolutely CRITICAL piece of US History too long ignored. He has his facts in place. He lays it all out quite well, without bogging the lay reader down. Along with INVISIBLE HAND this work will help Americans realize how a desperate Corporate America and its One Percent turned to a virtually ignored Evangelical branch of Christianity as a secret weapon to undo President Roosevelt's redress the wrongs of a rampant cancerous capitalism that had crushed Americans for the prior seventy years... If you don't have time to read the book - download the Audible.

I’m not sure if stating that I am undecided as to whether this book is too short or too long is the compliment I intend for it to be. Due to the richness of Professor Kruse’s narrative style, his recounting of historical events could have run to several more volumes without overstaying its welcome. On the other hand, as an atheist, I find all of this deeply depressing. Doubtless, this land is decreasingly made for me, nonbelievers like me, as well as those who are believers but do not have faith that America can do justice to all faiths equally. Although, as Dr. Kruse points out, that has never been the point.Read this if you are curious about how this 45th president could have happened to us. As you will see, it is the—I am loathe to admit—the well-deserved fruit of more than seven decades’ concerted labor.

Awesome book on the History of people, themes and big money, corporate used in an attempt to make one religion the National Religion while neutering the First Amendment. It is true to it's title in detailing how Corporations and Religion came together to fight the New Deal of FDR. These two self serving entities fought for control of the people but did almost nothing to avert wide spread hunger and homelessness in the depression. The fortunes of corporations and insistence of religions on controlling the minds of people to produce jobs in their own occupations outweighed the immediate needs of the jobless and homeless. The opulent lifestyles of the big religions and their organizers came first over the health and welfare of the country, just like it had in Medieval Europe, where the Aristocrats and the Christian Churches ran the Continent. These two institutions were responsible for keeping Democracy out of Europe and ultimately creating the Soviet Revolutions in Russia that attempted to spread to the rest of the World. What is clear, from many books on this subject, that "Under God" means being subservient to God, the word of which comes from God's messengers. Subservience Under God means that when the opinions of the People differ from those of God as told through the Messenger, then God wins and the People Shut Up. Those that don't face stiff penalties. Fabulous History that everyone should know if they want to perpetuate a Democracy. The Roman Empire was "One Nation Under God", because the Christian Religion was the only legal Religion and it had only One God - no others were allowed and this was enforced with the sword. Rome will return to America if we are not careful.

I'm sure Christians will approach this book with mixed feelings, or avoid it altogether, but they shouldn't. Kruse doesn't make any judgments about their choice of belief, he simply tries to demystify the past.Fact: 100 years ago, nobody considered America to be "A Christian Nation".Fact: Prior to the 1950's, the pledge of allegiance did not include "under god".Fact: Prior to Eisenhower's administration, there were no Presidential Prayer Meetings, Prayers of Invocation, or other trappings of Christianity associated with the white house. We can argue the intentions of the founding fathers a different time, and we needn't pass judgment on anyone's belief (or lack thereof), but Kruse carefully and methodically dismantles the long held (and a bit tired) canard that "we've always been a Christian nation". My great aunt, who is in her 70's but swears that she said "under god" in the pledge as a pre-teen, begs to differ with Kruse, however!

Kruse tackles the question of why America is so Christian while most industrialized countries have remained or gone secular. Historian Kruse presents sound evidence that the shift started during the Great Depression, funded by a few wealthy individuals. The conventional wisdom was that it was a response to the godless Soviets during the Cold War. Basically, money from a few wealthy individuals funded a nascent movement. WW II kept it going. It exploded during the Cold War. I haven't found any faults with his argument. The time from about 1934 to around the 1960's are covered best, with only light coverage after that.
