This is a great dictionary for my elementary school kids and I believe it will last them well into their high school years. It has all the benefits of a regular dictionary (i.e definitions, pronunciations, etc) plus it adds a bit of "coolness" to learning and looking up their vocabulary words. I have 4 kids ranging from 3 to 10 so this will last me a long time. It takes away the "boring" attitude they have had about researching their vocab words. When I took it out of the box all of my children and even my husband liked the book. The font isn't too small or too big (as I had been reading about other dictionaries/editions). I would definitely recommend.
I purchased this particular dictionary after checking it out at Barnes & Noble. It was exactly what I wanted for our homeschool. I like the font, and the colored pictures. It is very detailed, but still contains easy to read definitions. I like it better than many of the other dictionaries that I have looked through. My oldest has been using it for awhile now and he thinks it is much easier to maneuver through than the others we have used in the past.I definitely recommend this for any homeschool with elementary-middle school level students. The same for just to have in your home for students period.
Almost love it, but the first word my daughter looked up was not included in this! (The word was "expository".) Just an odd coincidence because it seems like a very comprehensive dictionary, jam packed with every other word we've looked up. It's also full of many words I've never known! Most of all, it has color photos and illustrations of some words on the outer edges of each page (like the old- style big dictionaries - but in color instead!) Pages seem silky, very thin, but sturdy.
So far I haven't run in to anything I would say "doesn't belong in this Dictionary or is wrong a mistake". It is a Quality made oversized book. This is made like the Encyclopedias of old. A strong binding, good quality paper, and ink. I had a huge problem getting this delivered to me, but I am glad I ordered it a second time. This one came when it was supposed to. Way to get your things in to somewhat of an orderly manner Amazon. Kudos I recommend this to anyone with young children who need a Dictionary. They have others built as tough for children in higher grades. They are all well worth your purchase.
I love this dictionary! (I never thought I would use the words "love" and "dictionary" in the same sentence.) I'm a homeschooling mom and this one is completely different from the average "student dictionary". The pages are made of quality paper (not that newsprint stuff) and sort of glossy with a very nice type that is easy to read. There is a pronunciation guide on every page so you're not having to flip around each time you need one. The entries are offset by engaging, colorful illustrations. For example, when you look up "periodic table" you will actually see a periodic table of the elements. I'm so glad I added this to our homeschooling resources.
My 7th grader wanted a more grade-level appropriate replacement of the dictionary he received when in 4th grade. So far this one contains most (if not all) of the words he needs to look up when encountering unfamiliar words. His reading level is approx your average 7th grader, so this seems to be a great fit. Book dimensions are not too big for a backpack, and not too small make reading uncomfortable. Very glad I went with this one. Will need to wait and see if it's still adequate for a few more grade levels.
Great layout, well illustrated for information and interest. My second grader is using it for her homework which involves looking up definitions of spelling/vocab words. This was much more student-friendly than the large classic Webster's edition, easier to find an understandable definition that a second-grader could read. Most (all?)of her words have had an example sentence that helps understand how the word might be used in context. My only suggestion...our old dictionary had those thumb-cut-out tab sorts of things that let you easily thumb to a particular letter quickly...no such help here, and it can be painfully slow for her to find where a particular letter starts. We actually used the post-it mini tabs to make our own landmarks to turn to.Overall a great choice and I am sure it will be suitable through junior high and beyond.
Thanks for a prompt delivery. It was right on time. I've always been partial to this brand of dictionary since it came out in the early 70's. This is perfect for my studious grand daughter. The usage guide in the front is an excellent source on how to use a dictionary for beginners. This says for ages 11-15 and grades 6-9. It would probably be useful all the way through high school.
