I was given a copy of “Drowned Under” from Wendall Thomas and Poison Pen Press. It was hilarious, outrageous, and funny. I learned that even a $4000 handbag should have Tupperware and Band-Aids.

Thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for an advanced copy of Drowned Under in exchange for an honest review. I recently read Lost Luggage, the first book in the Cyd Redondo series, and it did not appeal to me. I did not like its frenzied slapstick humour, its over-the-top, frantic action scenes, and found Cyd to be ditzy, unfocused, and an incompetent travel agent. I am happy to say that this second novel was more enjoyable and a positive improvement over the first, which was set in Africa and involved the cruelty of animal trafficking.This book started out in the same over-the-top manner, but I was glad I stuck to it. Cyd seemed smarter and more resourceful. She managed to get herself into bad situations, but this time was rarely the cause of them. I became engaged in the plot to save the last Tasmanian tiger. Having watched a tragic documentary about their extinction, I wished this storyline was true. Along with Cyd’s determination to prove her friend and her future roommate on the Australian cruise ship had been murdered, and her part in exposing a conspiracy to defraud senior travellers, the plot held my interest. I was annoyed with all the unnecessary focus on designer clothing, brand name shoes and accessories. I was wanting to focus on a travel adventure, not feel I was reading a fashion magazine. After several dozen mentions of her expensive, Balenciaga bag, we get it. It was a useful accessory to Cyd in situations in both books, but it was tiresome relying on the brand name repeatedly. I found all the high-end clothing and shoe references interrupted the storyline, and made her sound conceited despite her mention of travel agent discounts and sales. I have always enjoyed stories of travel adventures and misadventures, but Cyd made me grateful that my travels in Africa and Australia very rarely involved any use of a travel agent. I would read another book in the series, but hopefully the tendency for slapstick humour continues to be more restrained and also the focus on brand name fashion will be reduced. The plot was well imagined and held my attention.

I almost have no words. This book is beautiful, fun, timely, and teaches a lesson about not giving up. It hits home, since I, too, had an Olympic dream when I was young. I remember falling flat on the ice all too many times, not to mention worrying about not being good enough."Snowman Paul and Kate's Olympic Dream" is also just the kind of book I loved to read aloud to my students as a classroom teacher. Katie is the perfect role model for any young child who needs encouragement to give it just one more try. Dan and Paul model the kind of support we all would like from our friends. Lapid ties it all together with delightful rhymes and a fast-moving story. Pasek's illustrations are whimsical and appealing.In short, I can't recommend Snowman Paul and Kate's Olympic Dream highly enough. Buy it, read it, and enjoy it with your favorite young 'uns. You'll be glad you did.

I love the illustrations in the book. They are so eye-catching and beautiful. The story was sweet. My kids picked up on Dan's disappointment at the beginning and his helpfulness in the story. I enjoyed the rhythm of the story, Kate's determination and the kindness of Dan and Snowman Paul. I recommend this story to those the read to young kids.

The Snowman Paul books are beautifully illustrated, and this one is particularity timely with the Winter Olympics happening now. The story has a positive message about pursuing your dream.

Fun story.

This is a book all about friendship. Snowman Paul, Dan and Kate work together for Kate's dream. Yossi Lapid makes the story easy for the child to understand and the rhyming is an.added bonus. The illustrations are breathtaking. Snowman Paul loves the Olympics and helps his friend Kate. Kate asks Snowman Paul if he would help her win the Olympics in skating. Dan asked him the same. Snowman Paul said Kate first and then Dan. Dan helped with her training. They worked on her jumps and her speed. She got upset and did not want to go on. "No, Kate, you've got just what it takes..." Does she listen? Does she go to the Olympics ? You get the fun of reading to find out. Yipee!! I was gifted this book for an honest review.

The collection related to the theme adds this precious item to the well-known work of‎Joanna Pasek's art and Yosef Lapid's exemplary rhyming. Like the Halloween and Christmas volumes before, this one shows us again the amazing artistry, dedication to each spread and transports us immediately with movement and grace to the magic of ice skating. I actually wished I could frame some of her spreads.Now the other magic. This is the proof that less is more, and that less is by no means simple. Snowman Paul teaches more than Kate to skate. There's a valuable lesson on how to accept a challenge and take a chore to the end and be rewarded for your hard work with help and support of those who understand and love us.

I love all of the books in the Snowman Paul series, and this one is no exception. In this story, Snowman Paul and his friend, Dan team up to help Kate improve her skating skills. In order to succeed, Kate must work patiently on her jumps and speed. Dan and Paul are wonderful coaches, working hard to prepare Kate for her first skating competition. As always, the illustrations are extraordinary, and the story shares valuable messages young children will appreciate. Bought this for my daughter when she expressed an interest in learning more about Mythology. It's been a hit and she likes the jokes and the artwork. I wish I had known that the goddesses in this book are only referenced in relation to the particular god they are talking about. I thought this was the base book for the Mytholpedia books and the rest were more specific. I'm going to be getting her Oh my Goddess soon, would have bought them both at the same time if I knew.

After reading the first of the Percy Jackson books, and being a lover of the Hercules and Xena television series from years back (am I old???), I realized that I could use a little supplemental knowledge regarding Greek mythology. But, I wasn't prepared to read The Odyssey!This little book is a great way to begin to introduce Greek folklore to both young and old alike. It's presented in a light but logical fashion with lots of pictures and fun details. Don't pass it up...!!!

I thought it was really funny. I really liked that part, but it was a pretty small. It didn't tell me that much information. But I really thought that it was funny and that it great book.

"Oh My Gods!: A Look-it-Up Guide to the Gods of Mythology" is an encyclopedia by Megan E. Bryant, and is only one of a series of books in the Scholastic series, meant for late elementary or junior high school students; covering Greek mythology at a basic introductory level - not intended as exhaustive, comprehensive coverage of any and all within that topic. The book's best feature is the large illustrations and artwork that permeate cover to cover, including the cover. The purpose of the book doesn't speak to WHY that age level of present and future generations need to be familiar with Greek mythology quite as thoroughly or convincingly as it probably should; ergo the application into understanding ancient customs, beliefs, value systems, and how they impact contemporary academics, just doesn't quite have the support otherwise possible. The quality of editing, publishing, and light-hearted authorship are to be commended. Included are the table of contents, glossary, index, recommend further study resources (including web sites), and start to finish the organization of the book is very professional. Ultimately I have to admit this book is what it should be and therefore on average I'm saying overall I rate it at perhaps slightly over 3 stars.For more serious students interested in more than introductory level ancient Greek and Roman mythology, I recommend "Dictionary of Classical Mythology" by J. E. Zimmerman; which although much more comprehensive, is still somewhat abridged for portability. Along with the recommend books and websites given by "OMG Encyclopedia," Amazon dot com offers DVD documentaries such by A&E "Ancient Mysteries - Myths & Legends" by John Swanson; by The History Channel "Gods and Goddesses"; and by In Search Of History "The Greek Gods (History Channel)."

Loads of information n great illustrations, good for nebody who loves greek mythology whether they are young or older!!!

I gave this book to my nephew for Valentines Day. (He is into Greek mythology and Percy Jackson books). As soon as he opened his package, he sat in the chair and read through the book. That is saying something because usually when he visits, he prefers to play math games on my computer. I purchased this book and another book on Greek Gods. He loved both of them. (The other book was a National Geographic book.)

I bought this book for my son (age 9) after reading the first Percy Jackson book. My son wanted to learn more about the Olympians and the Greek Gods. I gave him the book after school and he immediatly started to look through it. He spent the next half hour reading (choosing the book over his video games). He really enjoys the book and the colorful cartoons are fun and entertaining (at least for my son) As a quick look up reference guide, it's a fun book to have.

Daughter loves this book and is asking for others in the series. She is addicted to anything about Greek Mythology and this is fun to read.

This book was better than the first as see Marty as an older and more realistic age for his adventures. The action scenes are well-written and the descriptions are good.

This 2nd book reads like a Navy SEAL Operation.

Things get a little over the top. The story moves along quickly with lots of action. Reading Hornblower type fiction requires more willing suspension of disbelief than listening to politicians' promises. One senior officer remarks that Marty (our 17 year old hero) has gained more prize money in his four years than he (a captain) has in his entire career. To make mere mortals feel even more inadequate, a beautiful rich young widow with a strong sex drive falls in love with him!

The book is another rousing sea tale. Lots of fun and we'll written. However, the editing errors are quite distracting. If not for them, this would be a five star review. I urge the author to seek help in proofreading as the automated process is not doing the job. If you are attending a writer's conference, such as LTUE, ask your fellow writers.The book is good and I urge others to read it.

Nice to read as a poor lad climbs the wealth ladder based on his skills and not because of birthright. The stories move along and are witty most of the times. Half of ladies in the story are not damsels in distress, but strong determined and a bit lethal.To the author - write a script for Hollywood, set the stories you write in a future where space colonies replace these fascinating old world ports and planetary governments use the tactics and letters of marque to control trade in space. It would improve the stale nonsense passing for film today.

This book was riveting an d I only put it down to answer nature's call. I was enthralled by the story. I would recommend that you read the books in series order. Excellent use of major historical events blended in with the fiction of the story. A welcome successor to C. S. Forester and Alexander Kent. Read it you will like it.

There is a good deal of the machinations of the Napoleonic era of France that are revealed in this book that are an accurate depiction of history. This is woven into a lively interesting depiction of the characters adventure.

The editing is horrible. Errors such as spelling Sail as sale, or supply Corp as supply core. The MC fights with a Bowie knife, which is strange considering that the inventor was not born until 2 years after the starting date of the story. (Jim Bowie was born in 1796)

"The Lord ofthe Rings and Philosophy: One Book to Rule Them All" by Gregory Bassham is a surprising survey of philosophical concepts. Metaphysics, Epistimology and especially Ethics; based on and using characterizations, scenarios, issues and examples from the Lord of the Rings. It allows a refesher of some of the philosophic concepts previously learned or for new students of Philosophy an enjoyable juxtoposition of those concepts in a great piece of literature.

Don’t buy it crap

Like all the "and Philosophy" books, this is a great read. I couldn't put it down.

The Lord of the Rings and Philosophy is a interesting book which seems to come at the problem from two directions. One direction is to examine the books, trying to understand the ideas and reasoning of the different characters by taking examples from the history of philosophy and the great thinkers of philosophy.The other way seems to be to take philosophy and explain certain ideas, for example from early Greek thinkers, by using characters and events from the books as examples.In other words half the book is trying to explore the world of Middle-earth using philosophy are a road map while the other half the book explores our world of thought and ideas using understandable examples both adults, and some children, will know from Middle-earth. That IS the point of the series - using popular culture to help examine, explain and explore thought.Questions about ethics, what does it mean to be good, why BE good, would you WISH to live forever, and is technology evil are all examined. Some of the answers ARE interesting and also add, I think, to Tolkien's works. The thing is I think if you are into the Lord of the Rings, either the books or the movies, you may have already gone over many of these questions in your mind. So you may find the book boring or, at least, somewhat limited in scope. There are no real surprises.A good book to read during a snow storm in front of the fireplace IF you have no other new books around. Of course, I would suggest getting The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings if you don't already have it.

Haven't read all of this book but I am tempted to. It is actually a gift and I hate to give it away.

I have read and reread the Lord of the Rings for many years and always enjoy it. Adding the philosophical insights was really interesting and and opened up a new way to enjoy the books.
